We live in a world obsessed with external validation.  Likes, comments, and followers have become the metrics by which some of us measure our worth. We chase fleeting moments of approval, constantly seeking affirmation from others, often at the expense of our well-being. We pour energy into relationships that drain us, tolerate disrespect, and shrink ourselves to fit into boxes others create. We’re told to be selfless and to put others first, and somewhere along the line, we learn to abandon ourselves.

As a psychotherapist, I see the devastating consequences of this self-abandonment every single day.  Anxiety, depression, burnout, and unhelpful comparisons – these are often the byproducts of a life lived for everyone else but yourself.

So, here’s the hard truth:  You cannot pour from an empty cup.  You cannot genuinely love others if you do not first love yourself.  My task today and every day is to remind you of this fundamental truth and guide you back to yourself.

Choosing yourself isn't selfish; it's essential. It's not about ignoring the needs of others; it's about recognizing that your needs matter, too. It’s about setting boundaries, saying “no” without explanation, and prioritizing your mental and emotional health.  It’s about recognizing your worth, independent of anyone else’s opinion. It’s about understanding that self-love isn't a fluffy buzzword; it's the bedrock of a healthy, fulfilling life.

Here’s how you start:

✔️ Identify your needs: What truly nourishes your soul? Is it quiet time alone? Creative expression? Physical activity? Start small and incorporate one self-care practice into your day.

✔️ Challenge your Inner Bully: That voice that tells you you’re not good enough? That voice that compares you to others? Silence it. Replace negative self-talk with affirmations of self-compassion and acceptance.

Here's an eBook to help you with this: Six Steps to Fire Your Inner Bully and Give Voice to Your Wisdom. This guide provides practical strategies for quieting that negative self-talk and cultivating self-compassion. It will walk you through identifying your Inner Bully's common tactics, reframing negative thoughts, and developing a kinder, more supportive inner dialogue.

✔️ Set boundaries: Say “no” to things that drain you, even if it feels uncomfortable. Protect your energy. Your time is precious.

✔️ Forgive yourself: We all make mistakes. Let go of the past and embrace the present. Self-compassion is key to healing and growth.

✔️ Seek support: If you’re struggling to prioritize yourself, reach out. I’m here to help you navigate this journey.

Choosing yourself is a journey, not a destination.  It requires consistent effort and a willingness to challenge deeply ingrained beliefs.  But the results are worth it.  When prioritizing your well-being, you cultivate resilience, build stronger relationships, and discover a more profound sense of purpose.  You become a more authentic, grounded, and joyful version of yourself.

So, today, I choose myself.  Will you join me?  OWN YOUR SELF-LOVE.  It’s the most powerful act of self-care.
